Life rafts are life-saving facilities and equipment that ships are equipped with for emergency evacuation from dangerous areas or emergency evacuation from shipwrecked ships, and can also be used as flood prevention and disaster prevention equipment.

Life rafts are modern rafts made of synthetic materials, including metal pipes, composite pipes, plastic pipes, synthetic resin or glass fiber pipes. The first part of the life raft is provided with a bow cable, which is a cable connecting the life raft with the fixed objects. The lifeboat remains afloat with full crew and all equipment. The floating tube of the life raft is divided into at least two independent air chambers, and the floating tire is arranged so that the life saving can still be used normally when any air chamber is damaged. The total weight of the life raft shall not exceed 185kg. The appearance is symmetrical, the color is uniform, there are no defects affecting the use of glue, separating layer, bubble, etc., can be stored at -10~+65℃ ambient temperature without damage; And can be used in -1~+30℃ water temperature range.

The life raft is usually packed in the glass steel storage cylinder, the life raft is installed on the ship's side raft frame, can be thrown directly into the water, the life raft can be automatically inflatable and formed for people in distress to ride, if the ship sinks too fast, too late to throw the raft into the water, when the ship sinks to a certain depth of water, the hydrostatic pressure release device on the life raft frame will automatically dishook and release the life raft.

Inflatable liferaft is divided into inflatable liferaft, inflatable liferaft and inflatable self-righting liferaft.

1. Inflatable life raft
This kind of life raft is made of rubber material up and down the floating tire to provide buoyancy, with double waterproof nylon cloth made of tent, with gas inflated into a round, oval or polygon with tent small raft. After the liferaft body is stacked up, it is stored in the FRP storage cylinder together with its accessories. Inflatable liferaft has advanced design, compact structure, good safety, convenient movement, simple operation and rapid formation, so it is widely used in all kinds of civil and military ships at sea.
There are two types of inflatable liferaft, namely mechanical liferaft and throwing liferaft. The mechanical lift-off raft was inflated before entering the water; The jettison liferaft is inflated on the surface, during which the liferaft may capsize and need to be manually launched and righted before it can be boarded.

2. Inflatable life buoy
In addition to the absence of tents, the manufacturing materials, main structure, performance requirements, forming process, storage requirements, accessories and other equipment are the same as the inflatable liferaft, but the release method is only the throwing type. Its characteristics are:
(1) No canopy. After the raft is inflated and formed on the water surface, the people in the water can board from the two boarding platforms on both sides of the float or any one side of the float, which is convenient and fast.
(2) The rated crew is more than the inflatable life raft with a tent, which can carry up to 50 people.
(3) The bottom of the double-layer raft of the life buoy is located between the upper and lower floating tires. Therefore, no matter what the sea conditions are, the float will be in a positive state (both sides can be used) after aeration on the sea surface, and no manual righting is required.
(4) This kind of life buoy has no canopy, the personnel are greatly affected by the sea conditions and climate, and the main equipment is on the passenger ship.

3. Inflatable self-righting liferaft
In order to overcome the overturned condition that may be formed during the formation of the inflatable liferaft on the sea surface, avoid the difficulties of personnel launching the righting raft, and meet the needs of the survival personnel at sea for safety and rapid response, some manufacturers have developed inflatable self-righting liferaft. Once this kind of life raft is overturned on the sea during the release process, the contact surface with water can be reduced due to the round shape of the top of the raft, the sum of the weight of the raft and accessories makes its center of gravity at the bottom of the life raft, and it can be righted by itself after the life raft is inflated and formed.
